What is the Perfect Diamond

The Perfect Diamond - Seferian Diamonds

When it comes to choice in what will make the perfect diamond for a particular purpose, the modern day shopper has a plethora of opportunities. However, this wasn’t always the case, and in fact, even though the use of diamonds dates back nearly six thousand years ago, for most of that time people simply used diamonds as they were dug up, rejecting those that didn’t look well.

It wasn’t until the Middle Ages that the consumers first conceived of a choice in cut and started considering what exactly makes up the perfect diamond. Of course, at first, there weren’t many options as the classic but somewhat primitive point cut was achieved using the tools that were available to them. Later on, this was improved upon to create the table cut.

However, neither one of these early ways of shaping the perfect diamond really revealed the fire or the strong dispersion of light those modern gems are so famous for. In fact, in the very earliest of days, these gems were the choice item for jewelry because of its luster and hardness, and would actually appear completely black to the eye when table-cut.

However, as technology improved so did the art of cutting and artisans started seeking the way to create the perfect diamond. The choice of cut has a lot to do with how the gem appears to a human eye and the geometric, symmetrical shape of this unique gemstone was created with triangular facets creating what were called rose cuts.

It wasn’t until the 17th century that diamond artisans introduced the very first kind of a shape for this gem that introduced its brilliance. This type of a shaping of this gem was called the Mazarin cut and was designed to produce something alike the brilliant jewel of today, although considerably less dull due to inferior technique and primitive tools.

The search for the perfect diamond continued and many a choice was added to the consumer when they were shopping for a gem to include in their ornamentation. In fact, in the early 20th century, this search was given a huge boost as one of the famous jewelers at the time mathematically calculated both the brilliance of a gem, which is defined as the amount of white light reflected, and its fire, which is the dispersion of light.

Such calculations allowed jewelers for the first time to know exactly which brilliant cut suited the gem the best and created the beautiful sparkling pieces of stone that the modern world treasures as much as it does today. These new techniques allowed the artisans everywhere to create their unique and expensive creations while maintaining the quality of this singular gemstone.

There is a multitude of different round brilliant cuts out there today along with some specialized fancy cuts which are used in certain pieces to give them a truly unique look. With a scientific look at an artist’s field, these types of alterations of the rough stone create some of the most memorable pieces that exist.
