Some History about Wedding Bands and Wedding Rings

For a variety of cultures and long before recorded history, wedding bands have been used as a symbol of the sacred sanctity of marriage. These simple rings were created to symbolize unity, union, and the very cycle or circle of life itself, along with such timeless symbolism such as the sun, the moon, or the world itself; read more about wedding bands below.

What some people may not know is that for many centuries, most of the people created these simple bands out of iron. Nobility wore gold or silver, and in fact, in many European cultures local Sumptuary laws prevented people from wearing accessories or clothes that did not befit their status.

Another fact that many people may not be aware of is that for a very long time, only the women wore such rings. In fact, for many centuries, the wedding ring itself was the final gift of a series of long gifts that began at the betrothal and ended with the wedding night. Many times the value of these rings reflected the status of the groom and the value of the bride, as these rings and other gifts were part of the bride price the groom paid to the bride’s family.

The tradition wedding rings and bands date far back into antiquity. The circle is one of the most perfect shapes in nature, and in fact, Plato himself considered the circle and by extension the sphere to be an image of perfection in the world. For this reason, the circle has long since symbolized eternity and unity, and has served to commemorate the lasting nature of wedding vows themselves. 

 In recent years, however, the wedding ring tradition has changed to mean that both men and women now wear rings after getting married. This tradition has really only taken hold in the twentieth century, and in fact, many historians believe that it really took off with the advent of World War II.  With the unprecedented amount of young husbands separated from their wives, the double ring ceremony being the engagement ring and the wedding ring served as a palpable symbol of their connection no matter how far apart they are.

In addition to this, many modern couples choose to use their wedding rings as a unique and individual expression of their mutual love and commitment. For this reason, many modern wedding rings are in fact engraved with a unique pattern, or can be inscribed with the names of the couple along with a simple sentiment, maybe a personal message engraved on the inside of the ring.
